Severn Trent Rivers Champs

This pretigious annual event is an Eliminator for the England Rivers Team, and this year will see the inauguration of the Trevor Colclough Trophy.

Last year's event was won by Phil Dixon who later in the year qualified for the England Rivers Team at the England National Final on the River Tees.

The competition will be fished over the weekend of 23rd & 24th January 2010 on the superb beats of the River Dee controlled by Maelor AA.

All are welcome and entry forms are available from the organiser.

After a shaky start with only six anglers down to fish, it was unlikely the event would go ahead. As it was we had a fantastic turnout, with support from some hardened Loch Style fishermen such as Mark Withyman and Martin Burgess making the trip. They certainly were not there to make the numbers up as Martin won the morning session and Mark only just missing out to Soldier Palmer Rob Wilson. The conditions seemed favourable with a hard frost giving way to bright sunshine. The morning session anglers spread across the whole river. It was not long before it became apparent that the day was going to be a tough one. I had the pleasure of Controlling Adrian Cole who although fished very hard did not even get an offer and he was not alone. So the morning produced 17 fish between 9 anglers, tough going!

In the afternoon most thought there would be a big improvement on the morning. This was correct but not to the extent that I thought with 27 fish being caught. Again the field was well spread with anglers fishing all over the river. I chose to fish the middle section and thought I was on to a winner when I spotted a number of fish rising just below the weir pool. My hopes were dashed as I hooked the first brownie and then the second next cast (about 4lb) but no good to me. I started to work upstream stopping to chat to other competitors, we were all in the same boat it was very hard. Hats off to Ben Bangham who won the session with an excellent catch of 8 fish, he used a combination of double nymph and dry fly to get his fish. Andy Croucher stayed up the very top of the beat and was unsure that his five fish would be enough, but he needn’t have worried as all five of his fish were in the 30cm class and was good enough to pip Rob Thomas into 3rd.

As ever the competition was run efficiently and effectively by John and Ivy Ball who laid on cuppa soups for the competitors during lunch and generally made sure everything went off without a hitch. Johns and Ivy’s efforts were applauded by all after the announcement of the results. This is a great event and I for one am looking forward to next year’s event when the Ladies may be a little kinder.
