The Confederation of English Fly Fishers

NATIONAL RIVERS FINAL RIVER TEES

Fished over two days on the River Tees in Northumberland with 32 anglers qualified from eliminators through out the country. The Raby estate were gracious in letting the fishery to the C.E.F.F.  for this competition.
The river is a wild fishery with beautiful scenery high in the moors. It runs peaty clear with lovely fishing water and Trout throughout the stretch.

The weather had been fair prior to the match but on the Thursday the heavens opened and the feeder becks filled as did Cow Green reservoir. Then the whole lot deposited into the river.  On the Friday rest day those walking the river saw a raging torrent. The famous High Force falls were extreme Force!!

This was C beat. No access from the other bank due to the high levels.

Other alternatives were being sought if the river was unfishable.

A side stream being tested out by the Chairman.

Amazingly the rain stopped and by the start of the competition on Saturday the river had returned to a fishable level!
So all action to the anglers. Every section produced fish to various methods.  Duo, Trio, Wets and dries.

A lot of anglers decided to deep wade.  A lot of anglers got wet. The expression was – ‘Who did the J.T shuffle?’. This is where the bottom of the river is further than the length of the legs and the current takes you forward. Take the body mass and the ‘ooops’ factor then wetness occurs!

Others took a more sedate stance.

Phil Dixon in action on competition day.

At the end of the competition over three hundred fish were caught giving a rod average of over 10 fish per man. Some of course were more greedy than others, sorry, More skilful than others and the winners were announced.

John Tyzack was announced as the Rivers Champion for 2009. He has a stunning record of victories in this competition and further cements his place as one of our top river anglers.

John being presented his trophy by Peter Godfrey the organiser of the event.

In second place was Simon Robinson with Howard Croston, Ian Greenwood( Current World champion manager), Phil Dixon and Berni Maher as the 2010 Home International Rivers team. Alex Bobba took the biggest fish with a Trout of 36.5 cms.

There has to be thanks to Peter Godfrey and his good lady Dorothy for the organisation of the event. Also to hardy Greys for the magnificent prizes along with Snowbee. They are thanked for their support to this event.

The venue is going to be used in the Home International next year and the strength of the team should do very well.
