Severn Trent Rivers Champs

This pretigious annual event is an Eliminator for the England Rivers Team, and this year will see the inauguration of the Trevor Colclough Trophy.

Last year's event was won by Phil Dixon who later in the year qualified for the England Rivers Team at the England National Final on the River Tees.

The competition will be fished over the weekend of 23rd & 24th January 2010 on the superb beats of the River Dee controlled by Maelor AA.

All are welcome and entry forms are available from the organiser.

CEFF 2010 Airflo Bank Competition Finals Elinor Lakes Northants 9th and 10th October.

Individual Competition Saturday 9th October
74 male anglers and one female, (Patricia Cooke) from all over the UK who had qualified from their regional heats attended the Individual Final. Conditions were perfect, overcast with a gentle Easterly breeze and a temperature of 15C.
The marshals were briefed  by Alan Tonge at 9.00hrs who supplied each one with a microfibre cloth to check for any signs of a barb on hooks that were being used in the competition. Each marshal was to control a different section of the bank which had been marked with 75 pegs round the whole of the 45 acre lake. Anglers were to kill their first 2 fish of the day with catch and release afterwards with a maximum of 5 fish to be taken from any peg.
The anglers were then briefed at 9.15 hrs. and then they dispersed to their respective pegs for the start of the competition  at 9.45 hrs. Unfortunately some of those anglers who drew pegs at the far end of the lake didn't manage to reach their pegs until well after the hooter sounded for the start of the match.
The competition was fished over 4 sessions in the morning and 4 in the afternoon with anglers moving a distance of 9 pegs for each session. The lunch break saw anglers dipping hungrily into delicious hot pork and roast beef sandwiches followed by a selection of cheeses which was well appreciated by all.
In previous years, the whole of the dam section of the lake had been the main hotspot for holding fish, yet this year with the breeze coming off the dam there was only one section in the left corner of the dam which held a fair number of fish. Good numbers of fish were also to be found all the way down the left bank and a good few fish were also to be found on the pegs on the far bank opposite the coarse lake.
One noticeable fact was the number of fish that were lost during playing to the net. I must have seen at least 100 fish lost in this way with anglers keen to get the fish into the net as quickly as possible.
With the fish sitting high in the water, floating lines were the order of the day and best flies were Hoppers and Daddies, Crunchers Blobs and Apps Bloodworms.

113 fish were caught on the day with a rod average of 1.53

CEFF 2010 Airflo Bank Competition Finals Elinor Lakes Northants 9th and 10th October.

Team Competition Sunday 10th October

75 anglers, consisting of 25 x3man teams from all over the UK contested the Final. The teams had qualified from their regional heats and conditions were bright and Sunny, with a gentle Easterly breeze and a temperature of around 15C.
The marshals/ controllers were once again briefed  by Alan Tonge at 9.00hrs who supplied each one with a microfibre cloth to check for any signs of a barb on hooks that were being used in the competition. Each marshal was to control a different section of the bank which had been marked with 75 pegs round the whole of the 45 acre lake. Anglers were to kill their first 2 fish of the day with catch and release afterwards with a maximum of 5 fish to be taken from any peg.
As in the individual match fish were to be found in pockets around the lake so it was very much a case of the luck of the draw.
As before the competition was fished over 4 sessions in the morning and 4 in the afternoon with anglers moving a distance of 9 pegs for each session. Lunch comprised of delicious hot pork and roast beef sandwiches followed by a selection of cheeses which was well appreciated by all.
As in the previous day, fish were hard to come by and anglers once again struggled to get fish to the net.
As on Saturday, a large number of fish were lost during playing to the net.
With the fish sitting high in the water, floating lines were the order of the day and fish were taken using a myriad of fly patterns. These included Hoppers,Daddies and black beetles, nymphs such as Crunchers and Diawl Bach  and many others such as Blobs, and Apps Bloodworms in various colours and sizes. Other patterns which were successful were Damsels, Buzzers, Cats and green nymphs.
Richard Landsbury, the Individual Champion from Saturday, failed to trouble the scorers in the Team event, as did Individual Qualifier Jim Tuck from Chatton Fishery. Jim however was still smiling at the end though, despite having to dip into his wallet to purchase a CEFF England Tie for next year's International.
The whole competition on both days was fished in a friendly manner and it was great to see all of the anglers getting on with each other before, during and after the competitions.
It was a tight thing at the weigh-in and very few fish separated the winning teams from the rest of the field.

Many thanks also to sponsors Airflo who supplied all of the prizes for the heats and finals for both the Individual and Team Events.
